"Tom" Robert Rogers Scholarship



Tom Rogers' legacy is his '69 Fairlane Cobra which he restored and showed, earning several first-place trophies. It was his desire that future generations would appreciate the classics and have an interest in keeping them on the road for others to enjoy. The intent of this scholarship is to encourage someone to learn the skills needed to keep the interest and history of cars going for generations to come. Preference will be given to students pursuing an automotive profession, but all areas of study will be considered if there is a love for the history of old cars.

The 569 Community Service Scholarship was established in 2022 by Anthony Law in honor of Rosella Peters, Naomi Brown, and Lillian Jackson.  Known as “The Three Sisters from 569 West First Street”, Peters, Brown and Jackson were known throughout Knox County for their community service work at local hospitals, nursing homes, and churches. “The Three Sisters” also served as the foundation and inspiration to the establishment of Carl Sandburg College’s Women of Character.

Anthony Law is an active member of the Galesburg community and is dedicated to serving others. As such, his scholarship will support students who are active in the Galesburg community in various service organizations. The scholarship will support students who are active members of BSA, HLSA, MOD, and WOC. The scholarship is open to all areas of study and students must maintain a 3.00 GPA. Applicants must also be second-year and/or returning Sandburg students.

Carl Sandburg Prize

The Carl Sandburg Prize is given annually by the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association to a full-time or part-time student at Carl Sandburg College in honor of Galesburg's most famous son, Carl Sandburg...3-time Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and author. He believed that "Nothing happens unless first, we dream." This Prize is given to facilitate others' dreams. 
 
Sandburg was world-renowned as a social activist, championing the rights of children, racial equality, fair treatment and pay for laborers, women's right to vote, and the value of education. The Prize is one-time only and is not renewable. Students who are degree-seeking (Associate), as well as non-degree-seeking (Program), are eligible for the Prize. The award may be applied to academic or non-academic expenses.

Cecelia Landon was a non-traditional student attending Carl Sandburg College. At the very young age of just 38 years old, Cecelia unexpectedly became a widow. With three small children to take care of on her own, she decided to make a career out of her work at Sandburg. This scholarship will be awarded to students in a healthcare-related program of study (nursing Allied Health Mortuary Science etc.) The recipient must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and can be either full or part-time. Preference will be given to non-traditional students who are from Abingdon Avon or St. Augustine.

This scholarship will go to a student who has lived in the Carl Sandburg College District #518 for five or more years. Qualified students must be freshmen, enrolled in a vocational program, and maintain a 2.0 GPA.

The Dr. R. C. Westergren Memorial Endowment was established in 2019 by Dr. Westergren's loving wife Dolores "Dee" Westergren. Before his death in 2016, Dr. Westergren was a board member for the Carl Sandburg College School of Dental Hygiene. He would often get his teeth cleaned from students in the program, but would not tell him that he was a Dentist. To honor his dedication to the dental field, this scholarship will be used to support Dental Hygiene students. Qualified students must have a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to students who live in Galesburg as well as those who have Christian values.

Dual Credit Success Scholarship

Offered to students who participated in Dual Credit during high school. To be eligible for the scholarship, students are required to complete at least six dual credit hours, complete the FAFSA, have a grade point average at Sandburg of 2.0 or higher, and complete the DC Success Scholarship application. The college selects and awards these students to promote enrollment following high school. Awards are $1,500 for the first year of full-time enrollment following high school graduation.

Galesburg Promise

Galesburg Promise is built on the belief that education is the key to regional vitality and economic development. It was established by the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce and offers an incentive for students to graduate from high school and an opportunity for post-secondary education to increase the pool of college graduates who can be gainfully employed in Galesburg and the surrounding area. Galesburg Promise will pay up to 16 credits of tuition per semester up to a maximum of 64 credits for post-secondary education that will result in a degree or certificate from Carl Sandburg College. It is a last-dollar grant which means that the student must apply for federal and state financial aid first. In addition to this, students must apply for at least two additional scholarships. Galesburg Promise will provide the remainder of the cost of tuition after other financial aid according to an arranged percentage based on the number of years of attendance in Galesburg District #205. The 2.0 GPA requirement only begins after their first term with Sandburg. The high school GPA has no bearing on eligibility. Students must apply to the Galesburg Promise each year.

This scholarship will be awarded to a second-year nursing student who lives in either Knox or Warren County and has a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Kandy Sayrs Memorial Scholarship



The Kandy Sayrs Memorial Scholarship was established in 2022 following the bequest of long-time local dentist, Kandy Sayrs. Kandy practiced in the Galesburg area for 30 years. She trained and employed many Sandburg students graduating from the Dental Hygiene program. This scholarship will support dental hygiene students who have maintained a 3.0 GPA. Kandy believed in the value of a good education and always giving your best effort in anything that you do. The Kandy Sayrs Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a dental hygiene student who, like Kandy, shares the same passion and dedication to the dental field.

The Kody Taylor Memorial Scholarship is the first of its kind to be offered at Carl Sandburg College. It was established in 2021 in memory of Dakota “Kody” Taylor by his parents Jennifer and Joe Taylor and his sister Abbey Taylor.

Kody was a volunteer firefighter and was enrolled in the Carl Sandburg EMT Program when he was killed in an accident. Kody from a young age knew that becoming a firefighter and helping others was his path and passion in life. The Kody Taylor Memorial Scholarship is available to returning or continuing students who also have a passion to pursue a Firefighter/EMT program of study.

The Walter and Rose Sampson Promise is built on the belief that education is the key to achieving dreams and changing lives. It was established by a generous gift from Walter and Rose Sampson in collaboration with the Pattee Foundation, Twomey Foundation, United School District Foundation, Monmouth-Roseville Foundation, and many others.

Walter and Rose Sampson Promise will pay up to 16 credits of tuition per semester, up to a maximum of 64 credits for post-secondary education toward a degree or certificate from Carl Sandburg College. It is a last-dollar grant, which means that the student must apply for federal and state financial aid as well as other scholarships. The Walter and Rose Sampson Promise will provide the remainder of tuition after other financial aid, according to an arranged percentage based on the number of years of qualifying attendance.

Established in 2019 by beloved family and friends, the Megan Worley Memorial Scholarship will honor Megan's passion for nursing and care for others.  Megan graduated from Carl Sandburg College's Nursing Program in 2012 and was taken too soon from this world in 2018. To carry on Megan's memory, this scholarship will go to a deserving LPN student who has maintained a 3.5 GPA and demonstrates financial need.

The Wendel and Elvira Hunigan Carl Sandburg College Scholarships provide financial assistance to African American students who desire to attend Carl Sandburg College. The scholarship is named for Professor Wendel Hunigan, a longtime instructor at Carl Sandburg College, and Elvira Hunigan, his wife and registered nurse, who also attended Carl Sandburg College during her nursing training. This scholarship also recognizes that a majority of community college students, especially students of color, do not begin their higher education directly out of high school.

Theresa C. Clay Memorial Scholarship for Nursing

The Theresa C. Clay Memorial Scholarship for Nursing was established by Amanda J. Clay-Copes & CDR. J. A. Copes, USN, ret. in 2016 in honor of Theresa C. Clay, R.N., B.S.N., M.N.A. The scholarship will be available to students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0, reside within the boundaries of Sandburg District 518, are enrolled full-time, and are in the nursing program. Candidates must also be single parents.

​​​​​​The Tom L. Wilson and Judith A. Wilson Scholarship is available annually to Galesburg district students who plan to pursue a degree in the teaching/education field. Students must maintain a 3.5 GPA to qualify. This scholarship will cover tuition and fees only.

Tres Café International Scholarship



The Tres Café International Scholarship was established in 2022 by Shirley Chu, owner of Tres Café in Galesburg, IL in honor of Alecsandra, Denice, Kyle, Andre, and John Chu. This scholarship will be awarded to international students, foreign-born, or first-generation American-born students. Shirley has a deep love for serving the community and as such, recipients of her award must also be engaged in community service through United Way, Rotary, or the YMCA. Students who are active members of the Carl Sandburg College Office of Diversity and Inclusion (MOD, WOC, HLSA, BSA, Rotaract) are required.

The Winnifred Wilkes Buie & Cecil Alexander Buie Memorial Scholarship was established in 2016 by Harrel and Judy Timmons in memory of Judy's parents, Winnifred and Cecil. Preference will be given to students from Knox, Warren, or Mercer counties. Preference will also be given to students planning to pursue an education, business, or manufacturing degree. Students must maintain a 2.0 to receive this scholarship.

The Family of Dave and Sandy Wood has long valued the “Helping Professions” and supporting people in need to lead lives of quality and purpose. Our family is closely tied to the many facets of human service: RNs, CNAs, social workers, doctors, fire fighters and military servants. The Wood Family Scholarship is intended to be broad but centered on human service. This career field is dedicated to helping diverse individuals solve the challenges that they face while valuing their community, culture and self-determination. Healthcare professions, social work, case management, counseling, and occupations serving people with disabilities are among the professions this scholarship will support. The applicant must have a strong desire to help others and improve the well-being of our communities.
